Why I Wrote This Book
I didn't write this memoir to revisit the past.
I wrote it because I know what it feels like to believe you're trapped inside circumstances you didn't choose.
If someone who has lived through abuse, trauma, neglect, or fear reads these pages and realizes they are not alone... if they begin to believe their future can look different than their past... then every difficult page was worth writing.
This book isn't about staying in the darkness. It's about finding the courage to walk toward the light.

What the Darkness Made Me
For most of her childhood, Lacy lived inside a world carefully hidden from everyone around her.
Behind closed doors were violence, fear, instability, and alcoholism. While the family appeared ordinary from the outside, survival became second nature.
She learned to hide in closets during violent nights, navigate constant moves, survive as a latchkey child, and carry responsibilities far beyond her years.
But this memoir is about far more than surviving abuse. It is about resilience.
Through poverty, instability, and years of silence, Lacy clung to education, determination, and the belief that there had to be something better waiting beyond the life she had been given.
Honest, deeply personal, and ultimately hopeful, this memoir is a reminder that healing is possible, generational cycles can be broken, and even those raised in darkness can build lives filled with peace, purpose, and light.
